1971 Montclair Modern • As modernism evolved into a new era, this 1971 Montclair split-level took form. Decades later, in 2015, it was taken to the studs and thoughtfully reimagined by Risa Boyer of Risa Boyer Architecture, an award-winning firm recognized by the AIA and featured in Dwell, Gray, Portland Monthly, and The Oregonian for its refined, yet pragmatic modernism. In collaboration with its owners, a compartmentalized time capsule was transformed into a 3,635-square-foot timeless modern domain—rich in detail and connected to its Northwest-inspired landscape. The transformation was architectural and emotional, reshaping how the home feels and supports daily life. A raised roofline created a great room at the center of the main level, where vaulted ceilings, skylights, clerestories, and generous dual-paned windows usher daylight in. Walls dissolved, sightlines extended, and a custom accordion door opens the great room to the patio and gardens beyond, dissolving the boundary between indoors and out. White oak floors, book-matched walnut cabinetry, and a paneled feature wall add both warmth and drama. A floating solid-oak stair with steel railings reads as sculpture, while original fireplaces nod to the home’s midcentury roots. The new plan, has five bedrooms—including a bright main-level primary ensuite with spa-like bath that enables aging in place —3.5 additional baths, and a lower level with den, flex room, and family room with pool table opening to a patio with saltwater hot tub. The chef’s kitchen, with double Wolf ovens, Sub-Zero fridge, and Asko dishwasher, brings joy to daily rituals, while multi-zone heating & cooling, an EV charger, and sustainable design bring performance in sync with beauty. Set on a .32-acre lot in Montclair, an unincorporated neighborhood of Raleigh Hills in Washington County, this is a home where architecture listens—shaped by light, crafted with intention, and designed for modern living that feels elevated and enduring.
